Hi Mr. Trott,
I have heard and continue to hear these quite scandalous accusations towards the RG, but never once have they been properly articulated so that they can be justified or validated.
Going off your comment above, it appears that you hold some of that ‘perspectove’ of the individuals who want to lock the RG up and have them censored.
Therefore can you please shed some light on why these certain PLP supporters would even think of censoring or prohibiting the free press from printing? Please provide those reasons that you mentioed above.
Thanks
Justin
Response from Web Editor Tari Trott:
That is not correct in that I share any perspective and again, this is all beside the point, which you have yet to wrap your mind around.
As far as ‘evidence’ against the conduct of that publication, all one needs to do is turn on the radio talk shows or speak to people in the street to understand that discontent that exists.
As far as your wondering about why PLP members would want to censor a member of the free press… I don’t speak for the PLP, but from my work experience, I suspect they have never had an issue with the Bermuda Sun or the Worker’s Voice… the Gazette could be in a category by itself.
FYI, I used to work for that publication as a news reporter
.
Tari
Thanks for the response.
You’re right that they don’t seem to have a issue with the Bermuda Sun or Workers’ Voice.
But why would they? These 2 publications (more so Workers’ Voice)are overhwelmingly in favor of the PLP. Not so much the BDA Sun as they really don’t take a stance or what not in the political field and allow articles from both criticis and supporters alike. But the Workers’ Voice is unbridled propaganda and spews more hate speech and rhetoric than any other publication in print as of today.
So the desire to censor or lock up the RG because they don’t always report favorably on the ruling government is a anti-democratic and dicator like suggestion. It is like a child saying that the other child is mean to me so I don’t want to invite them to my bday party and I won’t speak to him.
Unfortunately for the PLP and their supporters we live in a democracy and for them to even think about locking up the press because they don’t like the reporting style (despite the fact what is being reported is true, unless i missed a libel lawsuit somewhere) is not a justifible reason in our democratic society.
I wish that we had hard hitting papers and unforgiving journalists like the UK. Bring on the Sun and/or Daily mail from the UK and I guarantee the PLP supporters would be wishing that the RG was still around.
You as a journalist should know that just because that a publication doesn’t pander to the current government in power that it is no reason to even consider censure, sanctions or ‘locking’ them up. That’s not what the press is around to do. Well that’s of course if you live say in…Zimbabwe or Iran…
I wrapped my head around that:)
